He created a strange alternate reality inhabited by B-movie stars and forgotten talents of late-night television, rendered in lush, obsessively textured pen and ink drawings that had an almost photographic realism and a vaguely paranoiac atmosphere. Drew Friedman paid homage to such celebrities as Jim Nabors, Frank Sinatra, Joe Franklin, Bob Hope, Andy Griffith, the Three Stooges (particularly Shemp), and camp horror stars Bela Lugosi, Vampira, and Tor Johnson, in nightmare scenarios often scripted by Friedman's brother Josh Alan. Their earliest efforts for Raw magazine and others are collected here and gorgeously reproduced.
